Worm Ebook Web Serial Fiction
Since it has been talked about in vs debates recently I looked up on Worm on tvtropes. Now I wonder why would anyone bother reading it. The world is an utter shithole where superpowered serial killers run around unopposed because the heroes are focused on stopping unstoppable monsters that are trying to kill all humans. Even if the heroes weren't preoccupied it would still not be much better due to the villains outnumbering the heroes and due to the heroes not being much better. Motivations seem to be such fantastic displays of characterization as 'I'm insane', 'I like killing people' or 'I'm trying to destroy the world'. An utterly bleak story that will end with everyone dying (even the source of superpowers want to eliminate humanity) with only minor pyrrhic victories along the road to ruin.

Not very familiar with Marvel or DC stories but don't apocalyptic events in those tend to end with almost no real consequence, even heroes that die come back within a year. I did read about 'Fear itself' after playing the table on Pinball FX2 and it apparently had several heroes dying with all of them coming back to life at the end, some popping back like Kenny. Does anyone actually believe that the world will end in a Marvel/DC story?
Nothing keeping the world safe in Worm. The characters are fun, the good guys do occasionally win, and call me optimistic, but I think that the story's ending is going to be bittersweet at the worst. Also, it, uh, it would be kind of hard to replicate the current apocalyptic conditions in any future arc, considering that it's kind of a confluence of lots of shit going down at once.
I also get the feeling that Wildbow isn't going to have constant apocalyptic events. Hell, after the current mess is over with, there will be plenty of room for rebuilding, room enough for there to be drama that doesn't rely on the end of the world, and it'll probably focus on what happens after, well, the recent events. But that's all speculation. Also, as to Jack and the motivations of the Slaughterhouse 9, well, mondo heavy spoilers, but Jack has a Thinker power that enables him to have a pretty good idea as to how to manipulate anyone with a shard, and he's pretty intelligent even without that.
Considering the nature of Trigger events, and that shards are designed to drive bearers to conflict, it really isn't surprising that he was able to round up a group of like minded people.
