It is very good in explaining concepts. Unfortunately, many of the exercises in the first 4 chapters so far come with the expectation that you know how to do advanced programming in several programming languages, and do projects like asking you to write a software keylogger, or write a simulator. On one hand it says it could be used as the 2nd course in a computer science sequence after the introductory computer science course, and then in the next paragraph says they assume the reader is familiar with a high level programming language and it's main constructs.

If your instructor decides to give you the programming homework and programming is not a prerequisite, like it isn't for my class you might need to learn C++ on the fly and I might need a tutor to get though them. This book provides an overarching coverage of the concepts of computer security in a very well organized and informative manner, however I did feel it was just a tad bit lacking in depth for topics that are highly central to cybersecurity. There are interesting expansions on topics such as how physical lock mechanisms work (lockpicking), but some of this material seems to be somewhat irrelevant to computer security directly. It seems that more expansion could have been provided for instance on Intrusion Prevention/Detection Systems or something else. Overall though, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a broad coverage of Computer Security. One of the better text books I've read.

Since there are no reviews of this book yet, I thought I'd post one. I will caution the reader that I have made only a cursory examination of the book, to evaluate using it as a textbook in a computer security university course I will be teaching. With that caveat, the book appears to be an excellent textbook on computer security. It offers a fairly broad survey and seems to be reasonably accurate in my quick perusal.

Perhaps more importantly, it looks pretty interesting (e.g., talking about how bump keys works) as well as actually having a moderate amount of technical depth. I like that it has an actual complete example of an SQL injection attack, starting with the vulnerable PHP code. It claims to be suitable for students who have had only CS1 and CS2 courses; that's a pretty tall order given the details they delve into, so I'm not sure if they quite accomplish that. Nonetheless, it appears they are doing a good job of presenting needed background. It looks like the authors may be emphasizing how attacks work and how to defend rather than the details of committing attacks. If so, I approve of that. In the end I had to make a hard decision, and I chose a different book with less technical depth (Principles of Computer Security, CompTIA Security+ and Beyond, Second Edition (Mike Meyers' Computer Skills)), because I wasn't sure how much depth would be appropriate for my students.

That's not really quite a fair comparison for this book because the target audiences are probably a little different.
